December 2008
PRINCIPAL'S NEWS

By: Mrs. Lee Marker
We recently received our Third Grade Fall Ohio Reading Achievement Scores. We could not be more proud of our students, staff and parents. We had an 85% passage rate. This is above the state and district average scores and our highest fall test score ever. We attribute the outstanding scores to hard work and above all, high expectations. You will notice that second quarter academic expectations are more stringent. Students need to take time to study and read regularly. Students in second through fifth grade have the opportunity to access Study Island from home on their computer. Study Island has two components: it works with students at their reading rate and math rate. This is something that our students enjoy working on at school and can work on over winter break, too.

December is such a magical time of the year. This year our students have taken on a project to help others in our local community. Our student council will be collecting personal care items that will be given out at the Helping Hands Pantry with holiday baskets. Personal care items include things such as toothpaste, deodorant, combs, bubble bath, and shampoo. One way that children can take part is to do extra chores to raise money and help in the purchase of personal care items.

I hope this season provides you the opportunity to see the holidays through children’s eyes.

COUNSELOR CORNER-OCTOBER 2008
By Beth Myers
As we have entered the holiday season, we have also entered an extremely busy and hectic time of the year.  It can be a very enjoyable time filled with decorating, cookie baking, shopping, parties, etc.  However, it can also be a time of stress for parents who are trying to “do it all” in order to make the holidays special for their family.  Please keep in mind that this stress can filter down to our children in a variety of ways.

Take the time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends.  Take care of yourself and your children.  Get plenty of sleep, keep your children’s routine as close to normal as possible, remember good nutrition and exercise, and spend time enjoying family traditions.  If you don’t have any, this would be a great time to start some.

Remember that your children have a few more weeks of school before the winter break.  Give them the time and the tools to be successful in their school work, homework, quizzes, tests, etc.  Assist them in getting ready for the next day by having them pack their backpacks, choose their outfits and prepare their lunches the night before.  This will make for a much smoother and less stressful morning and a great start to the day for everyone.

Bauer Elementary will have special guests from the University of Dayton
Women’s basketball team on December 4th. The players will have lunch
and play games with thirty 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls. The lucky girls will
then get to attend a game at the UD Arena on December 10th to watch these athletes in action against the Miami Redhawks. The girls will also take part in a special “Learning Can Take You Higher with Rudy Flyer” Day. This is a great opportunity for students to learn the important role that academics can play in athletics.

State Standards for Fine Arts
Fine Arts grades for music and art classes are based on the Ohio State Standards. Students need to come to class prepared and take part in the lessons. Completion of assignments is critical and time on task is essential.

Reminders:

•     Be sure that your child is dressed for the weather. As the weather gets cooler it is important that
children have hats, coat, boots and gloves.
Please use the crosswalk when dropping off your child. This is for everyone’s safety.
Be sure to call the office by 9:00 a.m. if your child is ill. Feel free to leave a message on our school
answering machine which is on 24 hours a day. If your child was seen by the doctor please send in the
doctor/medical note when your child returns to school.
Notes to school must include parent and student’s first and last name, teacher’s name, and must be
      dated.
Thanks to everyone who supports the Target Education Program. The last check came for over $175
and will be used to purchase indoor recess games.

Bus Information

As the holidays approach one vital item that Bauer faces is that of "Holiday-Mall Traffic." Please be patient with the buses. Many times it takes longer than expected to drive up and down State Route 741 at this time of the year. That may mean that buses will be running a bit later at the end of the school day. We ask for your understanding in this manner. Keep in mind the closer we get to the holidays the busier the roads will be. There will be days, in which the mall traffic will back up to the driveway of Bauer making it tougher on the buses to enter and exit at the end of the day. Our building flashers run from 3:20-4:00 p.m. daily in an effort to help parents, buses and staff exit the property.
