A Note from the Principal...                                                               December 2008
Dear Bear Community,
During this holiday season, I have been touched by the generosity and caring that has been demonstrated by all of our Bear students.  This month, The Character Council is sponsoring two programs that are making a difference in our community.  Monday, December 1st, began the “Weeks of Caring” in our school.  Every day students are able to bring canned food and non-perishable food items that will be donated to Holiday Aid.  The Family Canned Movie Night is the culminating activity for the food drive.  Students and their families are invited to come to school on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:30 PM to enjoy a movie and popcorn together.  The cost of admission?  One canned good, of course!

In addition to sponsoring the school-wide canned food drive, members of the Character Council went to Kingston Nursing Home last week to spread holiday cheer.  The students spent time with residents making holiday ornaments, playing a game and eating refreshments.  The event was students and residents alike.

I am pleased to support programs in our school that build assets in our students.  By contributing to the food drive and interacting with the senior citizens in our community, we are showing our Bear students that children are a resource to the community and that their service to others truly makes a difference right here in the Miamisburg.

Wishing Your Family a Safe and Happy Holiday Season,
Amy Dobson

Third Grade Reading Achievement Test Results Are In!!
Parents of 3rd graders will recall that on October 7, 3rd grade students took the Fall Reading Ohio Achievement Test.  The results of this test are in, and I would like the opportunity to meet with parents/guardians of each child.  In the meetings we will discuss the state assessment requirements/processes; the categories of advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic and limited; and student strengths and weaknesses in reading.

I have appreciated the opportunity to meet with many families already.  If we have not yet met to discuss your child’s results please call the school office at 866-4691 to schedule an appointment.

School Emergency Drills
Since the last monthly newsletter, our students and staff participated in a routine lock-down drill.  The state of Ohio requires all schools to conduct a lock down drill before December 2 to ensure effective crisis plans are in place should a true emergency occur.  In addition to lock-down drills, schools are required to conduct monthly fire drills and tornado drills during tornado season.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Now that the weather is colder, it is tempting to drop off and pick up students by pulling into the upper parking lot where students are closer to the school entrance.  Be continue using established procedures using Alma Avenue only.   This will ensure the safety of all students as busses arrive, load and unload.

Winter Weather Has Arrived
Our recess policy is that all students go outside for recess unless the windchill is below 20 degrees.  Please make sure that children come to school prepared for the weather-winter coats, hats, mittens/gloves, and boots.  Thank you!

Attendance Reminder
If you child is unable to attend school, please inform the office by calling 866-4691.  When your child returns to school, please send in a doctor’s note or absence letter so we can document why your child has been absent.  Thanks!
